Norstadt is a post-rock band originating from Glasgow in Scotland. Their music combines atmospheric synth and orchestral and guitar-focused instrumentals built around 80s-inspired drums and percussion, alongside vocals by Cornish-Danish frontman Fred Baylis. The band – consisting of members Nick Georgiou, Gordon Skene and Fred Baylis met in a studio in Glasgow where Fred was working as an engineer, and they began making music with engineer and producer Kevin Burleigh. Their favourite colour is dark green with yellow spots. Their new single ‘Swim’ was recorded across Copenhagen, the city of Glasgow, and the Alps. Norstadt believe it is important for a song to sound like the room it was recorded in, and the place in which it was made. Norstadt is a European band and it was important for them to record in unusual rooms and spaces across Europe, and to highlight the sounds they found there. Their newest single ‘Swim’ was recorded in a cosy studio at the top of a courtyard apartment block in Copenhagen, in an abandoned swimming pool in a house within the Alps, and in a Glasgow recording studio that has been a staple of Scottish music for decades. The sounds they’ve captured there have made a collection of songs that are light, airy, atmospheric and bold. They are evocative and demanding of an emotional response from their listeners, and highlight the context in which the music is being made, by the people who are making it.
